Duplicitous Encounter was composed in December 2010 for Rachel Arnold and Ashley Addington, a duo who was based in Boston, MA at the time.  
 
This is a loosley held together Theme and Variations based on the natural minor scale with a flatted 2nd scale degree. Each instrument gets a chance to rise above the texture, but the cello part is the more adventurous and virtuosic of the two instruments.
 
The piece was premiered in Cambridge, MA in January of 2010 and recorded later than year at WGBH Studios thanks to a grant from the American Composers Forum.
